Task Nine- Review

Describe your experience using the class wiki on your blog

Once set up, being invited and accepting access was simple. The biggest problem encountered was navigating around the page and working out where common tools were located (new page, links and format tools). It is not the same as using a word document so you need to be mindful of the options and appearance.

What differences did you experience between your blog and the class wiki?
Wiki allowed some interesting insights to class mates, while the blog work was a very solo task.

Which type of social media do think would be the best for a public library to keep its members up to date?
Facebook would be preferred if I had to choose. As a regular user and knowing the scope of people that use it make it non threatening option. There are still privacy, copyright and social consensus issues to be considered.

How could a library make use of a blog?
Blogs can narrow a broader topic down (childrens books- nursery rhymes), contain smaller audiences (teenagers) and provide up to date information on events. Dedicated staff are required to keep the blogs fresh and current.

Task Eight- Photo sharing

·         Search for images of “social media”
social networking images

·         Download a copyright free image and add to your blog, citing where it came from
Tree, Structure, Networks, Internet
·         Comment on your experience on your blog

This is really easy to use though copyright issues must be considered. Though I don't load many photos online, I'm aware of issues for privacy and consequences if an image is badly regarded online or inappropriate.

·         Explain how a library could make use of a photo sharing site

TAFE Tighes Hill Library use photos from events hosted on site for their newsletter and blog. These encourage different groups to come together, share an experience and have a record.

Task Seven- Video sites

·         Find a “social media” video and post a comment

·         Put screen shot of video and comment on blog

·         Embed one video in your blog

·         Use keywords to tag the video – why have you used them?

This is a Book Festival 2017 video from the Library of Congress.  Using keywords helps identify more concise and narrow information.

For this search Library of Congress was the first search terms. Once on the page, the videos were easy to select and view.

YouTube has its own 'keyword tool' program. https://keywordtool.io/youtube

·         Evaluate your experience on your blog
While the embedding was easy, the commenting on another site began to get tedious as many wanted contact details to enable a comment to be posted. ABC 1233 radio allowed comment without joining.

·         Explain how a library could make use of video sharing sites

Library of Congress is an excellent example of the amount of information that can be shared. Videos are current, topics are broad and user groups are easily located.
Videos are downloaded quickly and are filmed and scripted professionally.

Task Six- Facebook

·         logon and configure your profile- done

·         update your status- done

·         search for an interesting  “social media” page and “like” it-done

·         place screen shot of the page you have liked on your blog-done

·         Evaluate your experience  (ease of searching etc) on your blog

This social media tool is the one I mostly use. When searching on Facebook- you need to have an idea of who or where you wan to go as the search can result in numerous options. Smart phone technology also means access to updates and news from your friends, or organisation throughout the day- hence many schools and businesses prohibit use during class or shifts.

·         Explain on your blog how you think a social networking could be used in a library. (any type of library)
News and events about the operation of the Library is useful if students require referencing or research assistance. New books and e resources are published when available to be borrowed. Other cultural events may be hosted in the Library itself such as International Women's Day, Harmony Day, Easter and Christmas celebrations.

In May 2017, our class group organised, planned and delivered National Simultaneous Storytime to pre school children in the Library at Tighes Hill. Photos of the event are able to be viewed on the Library site.

Task Five- Wiki

Evaluate your experience on your blog

Setting up was quite easy and confirming other students presence was  easily done.

Participating with the class was entertaining but not very sustainable- getting constant updates about edits became tiresome, and then ignored.

Not being able to protect and retain the original information or images is a concern so it could not be used as a reference or original source.

Explain how you think a wiki could be used in a library. (any type of library)

Networking with people in the same professions to highlight success or ask for help or feedback is used in the industry. From there specific areas of interest can be formed.

This is a wiki hosted by the National Library of Australia

Welcome to the NLA Wiki.

The wiki is the Library's tool to support both internal and external collaboration activities.
The Wiki should only be used to share current information within a working group or project team. Documents that are collaborative, working documents, forward planning documents and ephemeral information are kept on the wiki.
